Ice Cream Crawl Across the North ShoreJuly 3, 2019
Did you know that New England consumes more ice cream than anywhere else in the U.S.? Maybe it’s because we have long, cold winters and deserve a treat for surviving the nor’easters that come our way. Or maybe it’s because we have some of the best ice cream in the world right in our own backyard! Maybe it’s a combo of the two. But who really needs a reason when it comes to ice cream?
If you are visiting the north shore area this summer and are staying at our inn, we recommend that you take full advantage of the amazing options we have just a short drive away. Treat yourself to a sort of “Ice Cream Crawl” across the north shore, tasting some of the best ice cream flavors around! Here are some of our favorite spots.
Sundays Ice Cream Shop
Starting right here in Rockport, on Bearskin Neck, is our very own Sundays Ice Cream Shop. There is a huge selection of flavors, the frappes are to die for, and how can you resist the view of Motif #1 as you people-watch on a hot summer day. Only minutes from our inn, this should be your first stop in Rockport.
If you plan to stay on Cape Ann and are yearning for something sweet, check out the fruit smoothies, fresh baked cookies, or traditional ice cream at Holy Cow located on Pleasant Street in Gloucester. They have a variety of different treats and even offer dairy-free vegan options!
Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream
Head on down the highway for about 15 minutes and you will come upon Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream on Beach Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Also located where you can enjoy the view of boats in Manchester harbor or walk up to Singing Beach, Captain Dusty’s boasts homemade ice cream and service that is amazing.
Hodgies and Hodgies Too
If you are heading toward New Hampshire or Maine for a day trip, check out Hodgies and Hodgies Too in Amesbury, Newburyport, or Salisbury. The soft serve and sundaes are legendary there and may need to be shared with a friend because they are humongous! Ice cream fanatics travel to try Hodgies traditional and not-so-traditional flavors!
Putnam Pantry, located about 20 minutes from our inn, is known as the north shore’s signature candy maker. You can find the shop on Route 1 in Danvers and you will not be sorry you stopped in. Putnam Pantry is the place for all of your candy, ice cream, chocolate, and lunch needs. While the ice cream is simply amazing, their handmade chocolates may send you through the roof! Make your own box of flavors or choose one that they offer in the store. You will enjoy every last bite.
Summer is a great time to check out all of the phenomenal ice cream creations the north shore can dream up! Ask our staff about where they recommend next time you have a hankering for some refreshing ice cream.
